History And Mission Statement

Franklin Food Pantry, Inc. was formerly called the Franklin Interfaith Food Pantry. The Pantry was established in 1987 as an interfaith organization to assist and provide supplemental food to the needy in Franklin and the surrounding communities. At first, the Pantry was located in various temporary locations as facilities were made available.

In its growing commitment to the needy, the Pantry expanded its social services in 1993 to provide special holiday food, gifts, and clothing to the children and families in need.

As a result of several factors the number of clients served grew beyond the management and financial means of a cooperative church organization. In 1995, members of the Native American Indian community took active control of the operation.

The Pantry was incorporated as a organization and received state and federal exemption as a non-profit charitable 501(c)3 organization. The Pantry was permanently relocated in 1995 to the newly renovated Franklin Senior Center.

The Pantry is operated by a volunteer board of directors, volunteer operations staff, and a part time I&R outreach worker.

Today the Pantry has grown into one of the largest and most efficient social service providers in the region.

Since the beginning, there has been an overwhelming increase in the number of families in the region. Most have been impacted by financial problems as a result of: unemployment (lay-offs & downsizing), under employment (part-time), divorce, disability, health, domestic violence, homlessness, old age, and rising food and housing costs.

The number of individuals requiring assistance through the year and the holidays varies but has remained at more than 1,500 per month. The peak number of recipients occurs November through March. Food distribution averages approximately 12,000 pounds per month.

All recipients receive food based on their family size and special needs. They choose their own food. Many clients have special health needs that have to be met as well. Nutritious foods are provided using canned vegetables, canned fruits, dry foods, frozen foods, meats, and bread to complete balanced meals for approximately two-three weeks.

The food is provided through donations of food and money, grants, and purchased food. Donations of food and money are needed at all times of the year, help organize a food drive - "Hunger Knows No Time." All donations of food and money are tax deductable as allowed by state and federal IRS regulations.

Franklin Food Pantry, Inc. (FEID#04-3272663) is a registered charitable non-profit IRS 501(c)3 organization and is on record with the Massachusetts Secretary of State and Attorney General.
